Padel: A Rapid Ascension

Written by Communications Department Portico Sport May 24, 2023

The world has awakened its passion for padel, and in countries like Spain, it has become the second most popular sport in the country.

At the end of the 20th century, padel arrived in Europe from South America as an exclusive sport for the upper and influential classes of society. As it gained popularity in Spain, it quickly spread to other European countries, leading to the establishment of the first national padel federations in Europe, which contributed to the growth and development of the sport. Today, padel stands as one of the most practiced sports.

In terms of competitions, national and international padel tournaments have been established in Europe. The International Padel Federation (FIP) and the European Padel Federation (FEPA) are the organizations that regulate and promote the sport at the continental level. Additionally, the World Padel Tour (WPT) is one of the most prominent circuits globally, hosting numerous events in Europe and bringing together the best padel players in the world.

Since 2016, the construction of courts throughout Europe has tripled. Currently, padel is practiced in numerous European countries, including Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, Belgium, Sweden, and the Netherlands, among others.

While the WPT is the most important professional championship of this sport worldwide, the decision to televise it had a significant impact on the growth of padel, boosting its reach beyond Spanish borders. From 3 international tournaments, there are now 16 held in countries such as the United States, Denmark, Argentina, and Mexico.

The rise of padel beyond our borders is due to key factors such as the construction of courts, the creation of clubs, and the push from the WPT.
